The essence of cruelty: Ichi the Killer studies the nature of savagery and its influence on people and civilization. ichi the killer -2001-
As the tale progresses, Kakihara becomes increasingly enraptured with Ichi, viewing him as a similar spirit and a prospective protégé. He takes Ichi under his wing, instructing him the ways of the yakuza and initiating him to a world of organized crime. Yet, Ichi’s actions soon spiral out of control, and Kakihara sees himself trapped in a web of violence and chaos. One of the most remarkable features of Ichi the Killer is its use of violence. The film’s explicit and unflinching representation of gore and brutality is not for the weak of heart. Miike’s direction is unremorseful and uncompromising, presenting the violence in a stark and unvarnished manner that is both shocking and thought-provoking. The film’s cinematography is also noteworthy, depicting the dark and gritty atmosphere of Tokyo’s criminal underworld. The use of close-ups and medium shots creates a feeling of familiarity and immediacy, attracting the viewer into the world of the film. The score, written by Toshiyuki Honda, contributes to the total feeling of anxiety and tension, flawlessly capturing the temper and environment of the film.
