As Eulalia grew elder, her commitment to Christianity only intensified. She turned progressively expressive about her religion, which eventually caught the focus of the authorities. The Torture and Death The governor, angered by Eulalia’s defiance, commanded her to be subjected to horrific torture. She was strained on a rack, singed with flames, and torn with iron hooks. Despite of the agonizing pain, Eulalia continued to declare her religion, calling to God and pleading for His compassion. As the torture endured, Eulalia’s flesh was left shattered and battered. But, her soul stayed strong. Based to legend, as she lay passing, Eulalia uttered her last words: “Lord, into your hands I commit my spirit.” Legacy and Canonization Eulalia’s death was a turning point in the story of Christianity in Spain. Her valor and faith encouraged numerous to stand strong in their religion, despite in the face of persecution. In the centuries that passed, Eulalia was venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church.
