In the 19th century, the cathedral underwent a major restoration undertaking led by architect Victor Hugo, who was crucial in saving the cathedral from demolition. Regrettably, the cathedral suffered a destructive fire in 2019, which caused substantial damage to the roof and spire.
The creation of Katedralja e Parisit commenced in 1163 during the rule of King Louis VII, and it took nearly 200 years to complete. The cathedral was built on the area of an earlier church that existed back to the 4th century.
