History of the LDS Church The LDS Church was founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith, a young man from upstate New York who alleged to have obtained a series of visions from God. These visions, which included the Book of Mormon, led Smith to establish the Church of Christ, which would subsequently become recognized as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The first years of the church were distinguished by persecution and hardship, but it continued to grow and expand under the guidance of Smith and his successors.
